[Bond] FIRST U.S. EDITION, ASSOCIATION COPY. Octavo (21 x 14cm), pp.176. Bound in original dark green cloth boards in the pictorial dust-jacket designed by Leo Manso. Priced to the front flap ($2.75) but with both corners clipped, as was the publisher's method. Decorative bookplate, SIGNED by Amherst Villiers, also SIGNED by his daughter Janie Villers in our presence. A near fine copy of the book with a few light marks to covers, jacket with some chips, rubs and tears, some minor sunning to the spine, a few old tape repairs to reverse side. Author's first novel. Engineer Charles Amherst Villiers (1900-1991) designed a supercharger for the 4½ litre 'Blower' Bentley, the gearing for which was made by David Brown & Son [D.B.S.], prior to their acquisition of Aston Martin, a struggling motor company previously funded by Count Louis Zborowski. His friend Ian Fleming chose the 'blower' as James Bond's own vehicle in Casino Royale, plus a company Aston Martin D.B.3 for the Goldfinger assignment, and later consulted Villiers while writing Chitty-Chitty-Bang-Bang, an adventure book about a vintage car based on Zborowski's 1920 Zeppelin-powered Mercedes. First edition of the first novel in Ian Fleming's James Bond series. Octavo, original black cloth. Boldly signed by the author âfrom Ian Flemingâ on a card mounted to the front free endpaper. Casino Royale was written by Ian Fleming in Jamaica over a period of around two months, largely from his own experiences and imagination; he also devised the artwork for the cover. "Within the first few pages Fleming had introduced most of Bond's idiosyncrasies and trademarks," which included his looks, his Bentley and his smoking and drinking habits. The full details of Bond's martini were kept until chapter seven of the book and Bond eventually named it "The Vesper", after Vesper Lynd" (Andrew Lycett). It has been filmed twice as a feature film, the first being the 1967 spoof starring David Niven, and later as the twenty-first official Bond film starring Daniel Craig as James Bond. Near fine in a near fine first issue dust jacket without the Sunday Times review printed on the front flap, priced at â10s. 6d. net". with some restoration along upper and lower edges. Housed in a custom clamshell box.

A first edition, first printing published by Cape in 1953. A near fine book without inscriptions. A little light pushing to the spine tips. No foxing. A lovely copy. SIGNED and INSCRIBED to the front endpaper by the Author - 'To Lisl/Despite whose loving/care this book was/written/X/Ian/ In a very good+ unclipped first issue wrapper with no overprinting to the front flap of the wrapper. Some light chipping to the head of the spine. A little light handling marks to the rear panel. Ian Fleming first met Lisl Popper (then Lisa Jokl) at age nineteen during the "golden time" at Kitzbuhel in Austria in 1926. She was eight years older than Fleming, and worked a local cafe. Described as a "plain-looking Jewish girl", she and her friends first spotted young Fleming when he walked into their cafe and ordered coffee. As was usual for Fleming, he sat and read a book by himself. Lisl recalled his appearance "with sleepy blue eyes and a romantic face" - but his good looks were not the only factor attracting the girls. He wore a navy blue knitted shirt of a kind which had never been seen in Kutzbhel before. Fleming soon became acquainted with Lisl and her friends at the cafe and her simple outdoor lifestyle appealed to Fleming immensely - skiing in winter, and swimming and tennis in the summer. Another physical activity - sex - kept Fleming and Lisl very active as lovers, and some years later he commented that despite the air of sexual liberation, he did show some reservation about the manner in which Austrian girls threw themselves at his young English body. Lisl and Fleming became lifelong friends, and in 1960, Fleming signed a copy of his latest James Bond instalment "For Your Eyes Only" (a collection of five short stories) to Lisl with the personal inscription "noch ein paar Eier fr Ostern!" ("yet another pair of eggs for Easter"). It is perhaps no coincidence that the female character in the fifth short story in the collection is named Lisl Baum. Upon Fleming's death in 1964, he left Lisl £500 in his will. Lisl later said that "all the things said about Ian -- his gloom, his melancholy, his solitariness -- frankly amaze. To all of us who knew him in Kitzbuhel he was exactly the opposite -- gay, care-free, terribly happy, the most exciting and vital sort of person. Not like an Englishman at all". Lisl Popper makes a brief appearance in archive footage used in the documentary "Ian Fleming - 007's Creator" on "The Living Daylights" Special Edition DVD. This is perhaps the most important signed copy of the first installment of the James Bond series ever to come on to the market. The book had been in a private family collection until 1992, then to a prominent collector and on to another collector. An extremely important association copy.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Stated first printing. Fleming's first Bond novel. Navy cloth-covered boards with red lettering to the front panel and spine. This copy was wrapped in an older mylar jacket that left stains to the boards and jacket - so there are thin 4" stains to the pastedowns and free endpapers. It also appears that the jacket has been trimmed nearly 1/4", in all likelihood to remove the damage from the old jacket protector. The good news is that the jacket is not -price-clipped, and the spine is unfaded. Inked initials to the top of the front free endpaper and to the top of the rear endpaper. Still, an acceptable copy of a rare book.

Soft cover. Condition: Near Fine. No Jacket. 1st Edition. SOFTCOVER - PAN 334 - SECOND PRINTING - A near fine example with very clean paper boards, with just light rubbing to the base of the spine but no loss. A few light marks to the rear cover but with no fading to the front and rear panels or to the spine. There is a very faint crease to the front cover but this is barely visible. Internally, the text block is toned, but less than what is normally encountered. There is a little light foxing to the page blocks. No previous owner names or inscriptions are present. A correct UK paperback reprint dated from 1955, the same month as the first edition. The publisher's printed price of 2s present to the front board. A very nice example.

Original fine crisp black covered boards with bright unfaded red titles to the spine, and a red heart to the front. The boards are in clean, beautiful condition with sharp corners, and no edgewear. The binding is tight and square. The end papers are clean, bright and flat with NO owner names, No inscriptions, No book plates. The internal pages are clean, with no stains, no handling marks, no writing, and no foxing. A handsome copy of this elusive first edition, third impression title. Please see images for details. The original dust jacket has benefited from some slight restoration to the very outer spine tips and as such presents in near fine/fine condition. The dust jacket has strong vibrant colors still maintaining the brilliant red to the hearts in the front panel and bright yellow titles to the spine (which more typically fade). The dust jacket has No edgewear, No chips, No rips, No tears, No stains, No fading and No foxing. The jacket is NOT price clipped and has the stated price of 10s 6d net to both the front and rear flaps. The dust jacket is protected in a new clear removeable archival cover. First edition of the first novel in Ian Fleming's James Bond series. Octavo, original black cloth. In near fine condition. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box.

[Spy thrillers] COMPLETE AS ISSUED. Seven volumes [all that were issued in this series], octavos (16 x 10 x 9cm). A vintage set of the 'Great Pan' paperbacks with the multi-coloured 'banded' covers and inset head-and-shoulders portrait of James Bond. Each volume correctly priced at 2/6 (all UK copies- unpriced export issues were also produced). Early printings with Goldfinger being a first paperback edition. Discreet owner name to inside cover of first title else no other ink inscriptions. Used copies with some expected toning and general wear, joints rubbed, spines aged and rolled. Very good overall. Increasingly difficult to assemble. These are unofficially referred to as the 'director' series, because the model for James Bond appearing on the banner was apparently Pan Books' managing director Ralph Vernon-Hunt.
