Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. First edition. First issue, with the colophon stating "Bound by H. Wolff, New York. Inscribed by Dahl on the first free endpaper: FOR CLARE / WITH / MORE / LOVE / Roald Dahl. A very good copy. Boards with the bright red cloth, and the top edge of the text block yellow. Binding firm. Overall, bright and clean internally, though several pages slightly wrinkled with handling creases at the bottom. A closed tear at the bottom of page 19. No writings or marks, and the color plates in beautiful condition. Dahl's inscription showing a weakening felt tip towards the end, though undoubtedly permanent. The beautifully illustrated dust jacket, unclipped with the with the $3.95 on the front flap. A touch of loss to the head and heel of the spine, with little bits of wear and tear around the jacket. Verso unfoxed, and showing only a small smudge of red watercolor. A lovely copy, warmly inscribed by the author to the then six year old daughter of Arthur Ibbetson BSC, the cinematographer of Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. Dahl had signed for her a copy of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory with lots and lots and lots of love, and as such the present book with more love. One of the most lasting and widely read children s novels, uncommon in the first issue, and very scarce inscribed. A marvelous association copy, with two letters laid in establishing provenance. Inscribed by Author(s).

Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. First edition, first printing of Roald Dahls James and the Giant Peach, with the correct five-line colophon on the colophon page, the earliest issue point of the true first edition. This is Dahl s first full-length novel for children, published in the United States prior to its UK release. Described by the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography as rude, naughty, anti-adult, creepy, and sometimes cruel, James and the Giant Peach marked a bold departure in children's literature and firmly established Dahl s trademark blend of the macabre and the magical. The book was later adapted into the 1996 stop-motion film, nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Musical or Comedy Score. Contemporary reviews captured the novel s daring energy: One is tempted to say that not since Alice has there been such a wonderland. The difference is that James is all boy and what transpires in the story is anything but Victorian (New York Times, October 26, 1961). Description: Quarto. Original red cloth, gilt lettering to spine, blind-stamped design to front board, green endpapers with some faint pencil marking, top edge yellow. Colour frontispiece and four colour plates, along with numerous black-and-white illustrations by Nancy Ekholm Burkert throughout the text. Condition: Near-fine copy. Slight fading to spine, closed tear to page 106, otherwise clean and sharp. The original dust jacket is not price-clipped and retains the $3.95 price at upper flap corner, with light toning to folds, minor edgewear, and a few small marks and nicks overall a very good example of a notoriously fragile jacket. A highly collectible copy of this iconic children s classic the true first edition of Roald Dahl s inaugural children's novel.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. Nancy Ekholm Burkert (illustrator). 1st Edition. Alfred A. Knopf / Borzoi. New York. 1961. [ca. 1970] 119 pages. First Edition, early printing as it is bound by The Book Press, not Wolff Press; and a 4 line colophon on last page, instead of 5. ISBN number present. Last book listed on the last page under About The Author lists "and the new and exciting Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator". Charlie and the great Glass elevator was released Jan. 2, 1971 so this would indicate that this was printed in or around that time. Orange cloth panels with orange-red topstain. Orange cloth is bright and clean; a tiny faint blemish on front panel that looks like it can be wiped away. Protagonist James Trotter's face is blindstamped on front cover. Faint speck on bottom page edges. Internally bright and clean; no writing within. Pages and endpapers are bright and clean. Slightest, slightest lean; barely. Original DJ with $3.95 price intact on flap. Minor shelf-rubbing along foot and crown. Faint tape ghost shadow from closed edge tear repair. Old tape was replaced with archival acid-free tape. Minor sunning to orange hue on spine. A critical condition report with all flaws noted. Much nicer than it reads. An attractive, bright, clean, tight, early printing of the classic. VG/VG.
