Colour lithographic pictographic/pictorial bird's eye view map, 15.5 x 74cm on sheet size, 18 x 77.5cm, text and images printed in blue on reverse, folding as issued to 18 x 9.7cm. Light even browning cover. Very good condition. Panoramic map of the island of Itsukushima (also known as Miyajima - "Shrine Island"), with a tourist guide to the island on the reverse. Text in Japanese. First published in 1925. The island, just offshore in Hiroshima Bay, is particularly famous for its shrine with a large red torii gateway standing in the sea, and is now a UNESCO World Heritage area. The colourful panoramic map shows the torii in the centre, with behind it a detailed depiction of the little port town of the island (each house delineated separately), and in the background, a steep staircase leading up the mountainside to the hilltop shrine. The guide on the reverse of the map gives details of the island's main landmarks and festivals. A steamboat service run by the Sanyo Railway Company made this a popular destination for visitors in the 1920s.
